- California’s Tire Fee Chain of Custody:
- Consumer pays a “Tire Disposal Fee” when buying new tires
- Retail Tire Outlet pays $1.75 per new tire sold to CIWMB a division of Cal EPA for the State Tire Fund ($1/tire) and to Air Resources Board ($.75/tire) for pollution mitigation.
- Retail Tire Outlet pays a Licensed Tire Hauler (ie Golden By-Products) to take/transport scrap tires to a Permitted Tire Recycling Facility (ie Golden By-Products)
- Licensed Tire Hauler pays Tire Recycling Facility to take scrap tires
- Tires are then recycled/processed into many different products
- How many tires are we talking about
- There are 35+ million tires generated in California each year, it is estimated 1 per capitia (therefore about 12-14 million in Northern California)
